Application: Guidelines, Letter and Timing

Guidelines

Started in 1992, the Colina Foundation has as its mission statement “Helping Children.” The geographic area of preference is the Southern Wayne County (Michigan) area, with additional support primarily in communities where trustees live or have interests. In the Downriver Detroit area, programs focusing on children 0-5 and their families are a primary focus, although programs for children up to age 18 are considered. For satellite grants in the Northern Colorado area, priority will be given to grants pertaining to at risk youth and those connecting children to the arts and the environment. Satellite grants in the Kalamazoo or Traverse City, Michigan area will focus on the environment. All grants will deal with our mission statement of “Helping Children”. Please see our list of values to further clarify. It is the intent of the founders to offer support for specific projects that focus on our target population, and hopefully, can affect societal change. We would like to see a re-emphasis on those projects that make us a better world citizen: critical thinking skills, knowledge of civics, tolerance, geography, a broader multicultural understanding and environmental awareness and stewardship. Typical grant amounts range from $500.00-$10,000.00.

Letter of Inquiry First

It is advised to first send a one page letter of inquiry to determine if there is a possible fit for our funding priorities before going to the effort and expense of sending a further request.
